Chapter Six

3:45PM, ???

"There's a Deviant about 50 meters forward!" Locke shouted, "Echo, Costia - you take it down. Lupin get the carriage to the trees as quickly as you can. James, you watch his back."

Those soldiers called on quickly shouted "Sir!" (excluding Echo, that is) and went to do the task at hand. ___ continued to follow after her brother, Vincent and Edwin some feet behind. Christoph had gone ahead to to the trees to prepare it for everyone. The journey into Wall Maria was difficult. There had not been many titans, but those they did see were mostly Deviant. It was easier with the advanced team that surrounded ___, but it was still difficult. She had never killed a Deviant by herself, and apparently had to. Locke tried to leave her and Vincent out of combats, for obvious reasons.

Vincent rode up beside ___, pointing at Echo and Costia, whom were expertly maneuvering around the large Deviant. The two of them watched in awe at the sight of two experts easily slice the neck of the titan, without either of them being in any sort of danger. It wouldn't have been a problem, being distracted, if they weren't surrounded by titans. Locke reared his horse up, quickly taking off in a different direction. His squad members had to turn rather sharply to follow after. ___ realized why though. Another titan was running right toward them. Their objective wasn't to kill titans, but to get to base in one piece.

The (h/c)-haired woman quickly grabbed onto her operating handles, attaching blades as quickly as she could. ___ knew she could handle at least one titan on her own. Vincent repeated what she did, ready to assist if absolutely needed. Edwin remained following, but Locke turned his head.

"No! What do you think you're doing?" he demanded, "You cannot go and kill that titan! Edwin, Vincent - you handle it!"

___ angry looked at her brother. He wasn't even facing her anymore. His (e/c) eyes were hard and glaring straight ahead. He hadn't even noticed that Edwin and Vincent had gone to attack the titan she had planned on. Her horse quickly caught up to his, and she glared back at him.

"I could've handled it!" she shouted, "Why wouldn't you let me try? Captain Levi would've-"

Locke clenched his jaw before turning to face her properly, "Don't you mention that piece of shit to me," he hissed, "That man is a coward, and he would naturally pawn his work on others. I need you alive and well! You're taking over for me, and this job isn't just killing or studying titans!"

"What is that supposed to mean?"

A wicked grin crossed her brother's face, surprising her. Yet, he did not reply. She watched his face suspiciously, ignoring the cheers of Vincent's successful kill. After a moment, Echo and Costia appeared again, riding up on their horses. Costia was smiling brightly, wiping the already dissolving blood from her face. Echo pulled his hood up tighter around his face, icy eyes disappearing behind the brilliant shade of green. ___ was curious about him, or just about everything. Edwin finally came back as well, Vincent not far behind.

The remaining Outsiders continued on in silence, keeping a strict lookout for any other titans. Locke silently prayed no more would appear - they were almost to the base. Vincent had struck up a conversation with Edwin, discussing 3DMG tactics that they had learned over the years. Everyone else was rather quite - some had no choice. Echo couldn't talk, and Costia's accent was too thick to understand while on the run.

Still infuriated with her brother, ___ looked around the area, searching for any possible base. All she saw was a large forest of trees that she recalled was a tourist destination back in the day. The area was eerily devoid of any titans, and she somehow knew that the base was in there.

Locke turned his chaotic grin to the soldiers behind him, "Watch closely, little sister, Vincent," he chuckled, "What you're about to see isn't approved by the Recon Corps and may very well get you tortured. I cannot force you into secrecy but. . ."

His face suggested that he would also torture anyone who disobeyed him. He suddenly lurched forward, his maneuver gear sweeping him into the trees. Costia and Echo followed, and Edwin after them, leaving theirs horses behind. Vincent and ___ shared a look before speeding after. ___ hadn't expected a platform to be where she headed. She landed on the wood boards, straightening her back afterwards. After riding the horses all day, she needed a good amount of rest. Once Vincent was there, however, everything changed.

He gasped upon landing, looking around the forest tops. ___ had neglected to be as observant. When she searched the area, she found several other platforms, and even some houses built into the thick trees. The base was rather amazing. She saw farms and training facilities and basically anything she could ever ask for.

"Holy crap," she muttered, "I just thought they lived in abandoned villages or something."

Vincent grabbed on her shoulder, "I guess it's safe to say they get enough food out here," he was just as surprised, "Holy hell, are those cows? Do you think they eat meat here?"

___ had forgotten Vincent grew up rich, he hadn't had any meat since before training. It was mostly whatever the Recon Corps fed the, and it was rarely anything decent. Locke removed his harness, dropping it onto the ground without much care. He flexed his shoulders before looking back to his sister. His (e/c) eyes were gleaming with hidden excitement. He walked over, obviously glad to be at "home."

"What do you think?" he asked, "It took years of work, and is still being expanded. With the amount of people living here-"

A loud squealing sound interrupted his explanation, "Daddy!" The young voice echoed around the trees. Locke looked over his shoulder at an approaching child. He laughed gently, bending over and opening his arm. The young boy jumped into the man's embrace, still squealing. He couldn't have been much older than five. ___'s eyes widened. She had no idea how large this base was, or that her brother even had a kid.

Locke rubbed the boy's head before looking at the two of them, "Keito, this is your Auntie ___," he motioned to the (h/c)-haired girl with glee, "And this is our new friends, Vincent. Make sure to treat them like family."

The little boy looked at ___ with wide eyes, "You're Auntie ___!" he marveled in her presence, "Daddy told me all about you!"

9:17PM, Outie Base

The base was even larger than ___ saw. There were almost twenty people living there, some soldiers, some ex-farmers. Apparently, Locke had saved some citizens of Wall Maria and kept them alive long enough to prosper here. Most of them were rather nice, ___ even met Locke's "wife." She was sweet enough, but rather a coward.

Every Sunday, the Outies had a banquet to celebrate a job well done. This banquet had many foods that they couldn't get back at Recon Corps HQ. Though it was only a Thursday, neither Vincent nor ___ could experience the banquet quite yet. Both had to undergo minor training in the next few weeks before they could even step foot in the banquet hall. This training wasn't anything too difficult, from what they heard. Learning to farm, learning minor medicines, how to use the maneuver gear in climates and positions like such. Locke had said there was more difficult learning ahead, but they had to be accepted fully into the tree town.

It was late at night by them time ___ had finished touring the little town, and she was definitely ready to sleep. Fortunately, during the tour, she was shown which little house she would be sleeping in. It was small, but large enough for two people to sleep in - her and Vincent. The cottage had enough room for two piles of sticks and leaves (apparently mattresses weren't on the to-grab list). ___ honestly didn't mind. Sure, it wasn't comfortable, but it would do. Her bed back at HQ wasn't comfortable, this couldn't have been much worse.

Vincent had nearly fallen asleep immediately. It had been a long day, and he surprisingly slept without snoring. ___, on the otherhand, felt as if something was out of place. Her mind wouldn't stop running as she laid in her makeshift bed. Thought after thought came rushing into her skull, she felt overwhelmed. The rest of the people were fast asleep, locked away in their tree houses. No one would know if she sat out on the ledge, staring back at home - at the walls. So, she decided to do just that.

___ held Adria's favorite novel in her hand, quietly exiting the house. There were no doors, so it was very unlikely it would creak. The (h/c)-haired woman looked out toward the horizon, just seeing the tops of the walls. There were few lights, not enough to distinguish anything on the walls, but enough to tell where they were. As she stared over the distance, something occurred to her. The position the base was in, and the way the center light of the small town gleamed brighter than the rest, suggested that the distracting light came from here. Still, why was it so distracting?

She turned to look at the light, at its unnatural brightness. It cast dark shadows in every little corner, but provided light for so much more. Her (e/c) orbs studied it intently, looking for any source of logical distractions about it. Or were humans just like moths?

"You're a curiosity, aren't you?" she whispered, "Caused many soldiers to fall to their deaths, almost me with them."

Who is your favorite character so far in the book?
Personally, I really like Locke :-)
But no one will replace Levi.

Also, rereading chapters before I post them is very confusing. Omw
I have like 5 other chapters done ahead of it and I can't believe the difference.
